HELP: Starting Off

The primary search mechanism is the "Full Names" list box, which appears as in the frame to the left of this one. It is supplemented by two additional list boxes, "Surnames" and "Soundex", which can be brought into that frame by means of the buttons beneath the list box.

Full Names list box:
You may choose an entry to view by either:

The estimated life-span dates for each individual will appear next to the name in the search list. These individual life-span dates are frequently preceded by codes that describe its source and accuracy:

Surnames list box supplement:
You can bring up the Surnames list box by clicking on the "Surnames" button below the Full Names list box. This supplementary list box is intended to allow you to rapidly scan the surnames present in the file. It is initially positioned at the surname that was marked as selected in the Full Names list box. You may search this Surnames list box by means of the search-box, but you should only enter in the surname. Clicking on the "Full Names" button returns you to the Full Names list box, positioned at the first individual with that surname.

Soundex list box supplement:
You can bring up the Soundex list box by clicking on the "Surnames" button below the Full Names list box. This box shows the surnames in soundex order, each entry being preceeded by the soundex code for that surname. It is initially positioned at the surname that was marked as selected in the Full Names list box. It is often useful to scroll back a few names, however, since this surname may not be the first with that soundex code. In searching this Soundex list box, enter only the surname into the search-box - i.e. do not include the soundex code, which is automatically calculated for you.
